How to Build a Site in 10 Minutes – Part 5

We are here everyone! We are at the last of the series for the building a website in 10 minutes. It has been a lot of fun working on this project and showing you some of how my process is when I’m working on a site from a PSD or HTML site into putting it Headway Themes. This has been a popular series. If you have other ideas for a series, let me know. I’d love to do another one!

In this video we take a look at finishing the design with our thumbnails. If you didn’t do the homework before the previous video, make sure that you take a few minutes and add a couple of thumbnails to your posts, so you have something to work with when you work through this video. I ran just a little longer, closer to 15 minutes in this video, but it was just to finish up. Hope you guys enjoy!

  1. I have to say that I’m happy to have seen all of the transformations happen before my eyes in this tutorial, but I feel like I wasted my time because all I really wanted to know about was how to make the featured images look better than the out of the box Headway options. I’d be much happier on the ending of this series if the page actually ended up looking like the six revisions theme – including the featured images.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m overall happy with the instruction, but the “Work around” that was done for the featured images was in my opinion sub-par.

  2. I found it very helpful to watch you maneuver around the new version of Headway before trying it out myself. (One thing is clear to me—I need a much better understanding of CSS and when/how to use it.)

Am looking forward to a lot more of these videos, where we can look over your shoulder (so to speak) while you narrate. Fast is fine since we can always go back and watch again.

  3. Would be fantastic if you could include a skin or some code for all this work. Much easier to “play” with a setup and slow to recreate …. thanks!

  4. There was no discussion about interior single pages/posts and archives?  How do you carry the same look (header, sidebar, footer) throughout the site, not just the front page?

    •  @Metarazzi Headway gives you the power to actually design even those pages as you want. Or you can have them inherit the design and layout of the home page.  Up to you not the theme.

  5. Question: how would you go about making the post thumbnail look like it does in six revisions? Wide across, not a square. Seems that HW only allows you to change the dimensions in a square format. Would this be in WP settings? Or Custom CSS?

  6. As much as these videos are good sources of knowledge, this is more a CSS course than a how to design a site in 10min with Headway. Why don’t you focus on more of the tools in the Headway Theme seeing that that is what you are trying to teach?
