How to: Build a Site in 10 Minutes

Alright everyone, today I thought I’d spend just 10 minutes trying to make the site, Six Revisions, using just the Visual Editor. Of course I had to do a couple of tries to get it under 10 minutes, but I think that I did a pretty decent job. Sure there’s more to do, and they have some fancy gradients, but I think overall, what you can do with the power of the Visual Editor shows in this video. Hope you guys enjoy!

Spread the word!

  1. AJ, thanks for the 10-minut tutorial. This is just what I needed to kickstart moving my sites to 3.0. Is there a CSS Map published yet for 3.0?

  2. Great vid AJ

Just the sort of info we all need to get moving with Headway.

I’ve visited the six revisions site many times, in fact it was the site where I learnt all about using XAMPP as a local server.

    • @wmwebdes Yup! 🙂 It was actually pretty fun to do too. I recorded it a few times, first started at 20 minutes! So it was good to get it down to 10, even if it was a little fast. 🙂 I love Six Revisions. Great content for web devs/designers.

So how much are you charging for these ten minute websites? LOL

You sounded as though you were having a good time.

Just going back to XAMPP and local install.

I know that you guys don’t develop sites like that, you develop on a subdomain – a video on how you develop and move to final site would be more than welcomed.

        Have a good weekend AJ

      •  @AJMorris Like @wmwebdes below – I’d love to know how to “develop on a subdomain – a video on how you develop and move to final site would be more than welcomed” or pit us to another resource. –

        •  @CathyWebSavvyPR  @wmwebdes There’s really no difference on how you develop, whether it’s a sub-domain or some local install. The process is still use BackupBuddy, or manually move everything over. I did a screencast about this with 2.0, and the process is the same, http://headwaythemes.com/screencast-tuesday-moving-your-site/.

I’m sure I’ll make another down the road, but there’s other things I’m working on that haven’t already been done. 🙂

  3. Ole AJ, you’ve done it again!! Great stuff. Well a 10 minute website, I’m thinking about now that it will be a while before I will be doing 10 minute sites, but HEY, there’s hope. That’s what I’m talking ’bout! Very well done.

    • @Dwhyz1 That was one thing I’ve been trying to do…keep these to under 10 minutes. So it was a little hard to do, but after doing a couple presentations for local groups, I’ve gotten a 10 minute site down once I practice a few times! 😛

I would never do a site in 10 minutes for a client that’s for sure!! 😛 More so just wanted to show what you could do in the time I was giving myself.

  5. Can understand a 10 min site isn’t want we’re after, but it reinforces the ease of working with Headway when someone gets used to it and knows where everything is located. Just Great !

  7. Great video, really informative. One question, I’ve got HW on a site and for the life of me cannot get the “older posts” (much like what you have) to show up. Additionally, I cannot get the “next post” and “previous posts” links to show up on single post pages. Any ideas?

    • @JoelDay It’s possible it could be a plugin or you’ve got them turned off. If it’s neither of those, please put it up in the forums so we can help you out. 🙂

  8. Great video. I was wondering if you continue for another 10 minutes or so with a followup video – to finish

out some of things you mentioned that you didn’t have time to do. Like put in a tag line and move it to the right,

some CSS borders for the widgets, etc.

    I would love to see a Part 2 ( and maybe a Part 3! ).

Good stuff. I learned a lot.

  10. Excellent video foundation. I too would echo the plea for follow on video(s). I have fond that I can get to about the state at the end of this video (although I’m much slower finding the setting to change !!), but getting the site to look as the finished article e.g with the right click ads, etc is a struggle for me.

  11. Hey AJ,

Strongly considering purchasing the Headway framework so I can start building a few sites I own.. I’ve poured over most of the videos on YouTube, and things are looking good!

There’s a few tiny nagging questions that don’t seem to be answered in any videos, just hoping you can shout out the answer once you get a chance

    1) Is it possible to great full-width footers/headers? For example, I want the entire footer (from left to right browser edge) to be black, while the rest of the site is grey.. All the examples have the entire content (with footer) in a center block.. Anyway to do this?

    2) Possible to integrate Google Fonts/Typekit into Headway?

    Thanks and looking good!

    • @jrarseneau Apologies, I just saw this.

1.) In a way yes. There’s a few ways to do these, most of which are documented in our forums.

2.) This works as well, but you will need to do a little bit of code to get it to work right. I’ve made a video available in our documentation to show you the different ways you can use Google Fonts. I will eventually get to showing how to do the same thing with Typekit.

  12. Nice work.. Can you pls show us how to apply gradient to the header and footer in future. Also how to style the featured thumbnail images to look consistent regardless of the images size or orientation.

    •  @sarahdeesuk This actually turned into a series. 🙂 Make sure to check the other 4 parts out as we’ll go over some of those things like gradients.

    •  @roseandbw It’s called the Media Block. There’s two ways to use it, either as an image rotator or embedding oembed media (like a YouTube video). You can learn more about the via the documentation.

  13. These videos are really great and I appreciate them.  I am currently struggling with trying to use the Visual Editor for a page other than my Home page.  How do you select the page you want to use Visual Editor on?  My home page is a static page and so is the second page.  My News page is the third page which is the blog.  I viewed the site and went on the blog page and then opened the Visual Editor, but it takes me to the Home page and I can’t seem to find where you choose Currently Editing to another page.

I am using Safari as my browser, does that have anything to do with acting funny?  There are some other settings in the Visual Editor which didn’t seem to respond as well.

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

    •  @ColinBunston Best thing you can do is set up WordPress to display a static home page and assign a blog page first, before you start doing any layouts or designing in Headway. This way you’ve got WordPress setup (they can be blank pages with no content on them) and then when you go into Headway, you’ll be able to start a layout with the Front page and the Blog Index.

If you are running into issues accessing the Visual Editor, please make sure to post those up in the support forums and we’ll see what’s going on. 🙂

  14. I don’t want a space between the header and the navigation bar.  How did you maneuver the navigation bar to touch the bottom of the header?  When I attempted to move the navigation bar block in the visual editor grid mode, both blocks were outlined in red and it didn’t register the change for me to save it.  Thanks!

  15. Just bought the theme and started playing around with it before RTFM and wow, I had to come here immediately searching for how-to videos instead LOL

But so far, so good! It definitely looks like something I’ll put to good use, thanks in advance! 😉

    PS. Great video too!

  16. Please match the volume of the intro music to the narration on your tutorials. I am using ear buds and I get the volume set just right for listening to the narration and then if I go back to the beginning it just plain hurts when the music starts.

  17. Hi AJ,
have watched your video re multiple content blocks on a page quite a few times, which i can master,  (your instructions are clear). question is, with a static front page and a blog/news page, do they also show up as pages in vis.ed. or only as front page and blog index, at the very top? seems my blog index has taken over the front page and when trying to recreate using the single page,  as per your video, things have gone awry . i know I have made an error, but cannot figure out what. any help is appreciated. I was tracking ok, until I decided to add a blog to my site. thanks,

  18. Near the beginning of this video, you mention that it would be easy enough to change the grid width, but because of the time constraints, you didn’t do it or explain how. Fair enough, but I’d like to change my grid width! I’ve poked around and can’t find where to make that change. Can you give me a quick how-to? Thanks!

  19. Are you planning to do these in the 3.4.4 version. It appears to be some very different changes in that the design area and grid area have changed, leaving one to have to search for some of the things your showing. Losing time trying to following.
