I'm a full Headway Themes convert!

This was from one of our users the other day.

There’s still a lot of work to be done on the sub-pages…but we’ve launched the new design for the home page and main wrapper for Imago Dei Church in Peoria, IL.

This is my first site with Headway and it’s by far the best framework I’ve used. I’m a hack when it comes to coding, but I was able to do almost everything I needed to with my minimal skills. And the support team has been very kind…even though I couldn’t give them links to look at the site while I was developing locally.

I’m excited to keep working on the static pages and get them looking really slick. I finally feel like I have full control of our site and it doesn’t have to look like a typical WordPress theme. I’m a full Headway convert!

  1. Very nicely done! Did you all use a specific skin or use Headway from scratch? Also, did you use a plugin for the teaching page? Great work so far.

I’m a real newbie ready to change to WordPress (most likely Headway) and this page is just the kind of thing I’m thinking of making.

    • Scott – My understanding of what Henry did on this site is build it without any Skin or child theme. I would imagine there is some serious tweaking going on which Headway gets out of the way for you to do.

Don’t be shocked if you don’t see some really nice Church type Child Themes soon.

  2. Hey Scott,
Grant got the info mixed up…I actually built the site.

No skin or child theme…just Headway from scratch.

The masthead, featured pages and email subscribe are all generated from HTML in the Home page entry and then quite a bit of custom CSS. And then “Recent News” is a widgitized sidebar and “This Week’s Article” is the Featured Content Leaf.

But the thing I’ve liked about Headway is the HTML structure seems more logical and semantic than other frameworks I’ve tried. So I found it pretty easy to style.

And I use a plugin called Sermon Browser for the Teachings page. It’s a fantastic plugin for cataloging sermons. I would say it’s better than a lot of the paid church podcasting services I’ve seen.

  3. wow, Dave, that really looks good. I am going to refer back to your site as a place to get ideas for mine.

Widgets, sidebars and leafs are jargon i can handle, but you used those letters: HTML and CSS. Did you get under the hood, as in a coder using Headway, or are you a newbie who is starting to get comfortable?
