Content Block Options

The options panel contains these settings for content blocks.


If you want the content in this block to do its default function (such as the loop for the Blog Index layout), don’t do anything here. To customize the query that retrieves content, change Query Mode to Custom Query, and then go to Query Filters.

Query Filters

Use query filters to set up a customized query for your content block. For example, your site could have a page for each author where the content block has a query limiting the displayed posts to only those written by the selected author.

  • Fetch Page Content. To display a particular WordPress page’s content, select the page. You might use this if you have multiple content blocks in a layout—one with dynamic content and another with static content pulled from a page. Note: If you select a page, all of the other options are ignored.
  • Categories. To display posts only from certain categories, click the pencil icon, and select the categories. Hold down the Ctrl key while selecting multiple categories. The default behavior is to display posts from all categories.
  • Categories Mode. The default setting is to include the selected categories. However, if you want posts from selected categories to not show up, select Exclude.
  • Post Type.
    The default query includes only posts. To change the type of entry that appears (such as pages), select a different type. Hold down the Ctrl key while selecting multiple types. If you select multiple types, they will be intermixed in the displayed content.
  • Author. Limit the query to certain authors. Hold down the Ctrl key while selecting multiple authors. The default setting is all authors.
  • Number of Posts. Type the number of entries to display on each page.
  • Offset.
    Indicates the number of entries to ignore in the query that would otherwise be shown first. For example, an offset of 1 for a query of all posts in descending order by date would leave out the most recent post. You could do this if you wanted a page for showing only the most recent post and linking to all additional posts (similar to an archive) shown on a separate page.
  • Order By. The entry data used to determine the sorting of the entries. The default is the date published. Note: “Random” shuffles the order of the entries each time the page is loaded.
  • Order.
    How the entries will be sorted in your query using the “Order By”
    option. For example, posts ordered by date and using ascending order are shown oldest to newest (lower numbers to higher numbers).


  • Read More Text. Type the text that you want to display as a link from a post excerpt to the full post.
  • Show Titles. To hide entry titles in this block, toggle this setting off.
  • Link Titles? Determine whether the titles of the entries in the content block link to the dedicated post or page.
  • Show Read More. If you use the <!–more–> tag in posts or pages, switching this setting off will remove those links so the entire content is displayed.
  • Entry Content Display. Determines how much of each entry will display. An excerpt is created when WordPress truncates an entry.
  • Show Entry.
    Use this option to toggle off the display of the entry itself. This would be used when you want to display only certain other aspects of entries, such as comments (see “Comments Visibility”).
  • Comments Visibility. Determines whether to hide or show comments.
  • Featured Posts.
    A featured post is one without a <more> tag indicating where to truncate the post. This number tells Headway how many full posts to display (though this is overridden in any posts with the <more> tag). Headway will use the automatic WordPress truncation for any posts on the page beyond the number you type here. If you want no posts truncated, set this number to be the same as “Number of Posts” under Query Filters. Note: To override the WordPress truncation, add a custom excerpt when editing posts.
  • Show Older/Newer Posts Navigation. With this setting enabled, your content block will include links to the next or previous set of content that was returned in your query loop. For example, if you use the default WordPress query of 10 posts, the first page of 10 posts will have a link to the previous set of 10 posts.
  • Show Single Post Navigation. When viewing a post, links to the previous and next posts are displayed. To hide these links, toggle this setting off.
  • Show Edit Link.
    If you are logged in while viewing the site, each entry has a link to take you to the WordPress page for that entry. Use this option to hide or show this link.

Column Layout

  • Enable Column Layout. Use this option to divide your content block into columns, which can show more content to your visitors “above the fold.” Toggling this option on adds the next two options.
  • Posts Per Row. This value is essentially the number of columns to display in your block.
  • Gutter Width. This value sets the number of pixels between columns.

Note: Page excerpts are not natively supported in WordPress, but if you want page excerpts on your site, you could try the Page Excerpt
plugin (free). After installing the plugin, set the number of featured posts to zero, and fetch a specific page (see “Fetch Page Content” under “Query Filters”).


  • Entry Meta Display (Per Post Type).
    Select the types of entries that you want to display meta data for. The default is to show the data only for posts. Hold down the Ctrl key to select multiple items.
  • Meta Above Content. Edit the PHP code that drives the meta data display between the title and body of the entry.
  • Meta Below Content. Edit the PHP code that drives the meta data display at the bottom of the entry body.
  • Date Format and Time Format.
    Select a date and time format for when the entry was published. The “WordPress Default” setting uses whatever is specified in the WordPress admin panel (Settings » General).


Comments Meta

Using these fields, set the text that appears in the post meta data for zero, one, and multiple posts.


Comments Area Heading

Define the text for the comment section title and the heading that shows the number of responses.

Reply Area

The reply area fields specify text for the comment form.

Featured Images

Featured images are thumbnails that accompany entries to draw interest. You select an image for an entry in the Featured Image pane while editing an entry. For more information about featured images, see Post Thumbnails in the WordPress Codex.

  • Show Featured Images. Toggle this setting off if you want to hide featured images in this block.
  • Image Position. Set where to display the image.
  • Use Per-Entry Featured Image Positions.
    By default, the Image Position setting can be overridden in individual entries in the Featured Image Position meta box in the post editor. Toggle this setting off if you want the position setting for the content block to apply in all cases, regardless of whether an entry author has set a position for the image.

Featured Image Sizing

  • Featured Image Size.
    Applicable when the image position is left or right. The thumbnail’s width and height are set to the number of pixels selected with the slider.
  • Featured Image Height Ratio. Applicable when the image position is above the title or above the body. The slider sets the image’s height as a percentage of the block’s width. If the block is 600px wide and the ratio is 75%, the image will have a height of 450px when viewed on the site.
  • Crop Featured Images.
    Applicable when the image position is above the title or above the content. Cropping images may avoid adding a lot of scrolling to the entry. When cropping is on, the image width is set to the width of the block to create something of a banner.
